Gribbin highly regarded teamwork. Under Gribbin's creative
leadership, Y&R was known as a team. He also encouraged employees to
develop their own styles, especially when supervising copywriting.
In an interview, Mr. Gribbin revealed that, "if we have a writer and we tell him, 'Do it in this particular style,' we'll get less good advertising." (Mayer 1958, p.68).
He believed that one of the greatest assets of Y&R was that a man in the agency "feels he can express himself as a writer."
Mr. Gribbin always dealt with people in an effective and straight way. For example, when he had to fire an employee, he would try to do so as fast and as painlessly as possible (Buxton 1975).
Draper Daniels, who was a Y&R employee, told another story that well described Gribbin's intelligent management style. When Daniels went ask for a raise, Gribbin advised him to get an offer from another agency, then turn the offer down and tell him about it. He did so and got the raise later (Daniels 1974).
