BROADBAND HURDLESCompanies that develop and deliver broadband advertising or even "broadcast quality" ads for the Web are in great demand --ad agencies and technology developers are working round the clock to prepare for demand for this kind of content. The fact is not that many people even know what a broadband ad is and even fewer will be able to see one right away due to the limited amount of places on the Web for them. What’s more is that even as high-speed access becomes more of a reality, are people really going to want to see TV-commercials on the Web or will it evolve into something else? There are several factors influencing the acceptance of broadband as a regular media access the internet. These factors will ultimately change the landscape of connectivity to the internet.
User Acceptance
As per the data shown in the graph, 73 percent of the people polled said that they were not interested in getting broadband connectivity. If they same people were polled about getting Internet in the early days, they would have declined too.
Early AdoptersSome early adopters have not been able to fulfill the promises of broadband. Sites such as NBCi.com have been criticized for the lack of meaningful functionality. These early adopters were too early. Most users may have connected to these sites using lower connection speeds. Thus proving the need of more bandwidth.
Deployment ProblemsBoth Cable and DSL installation and support have hit bumpy rides. Users have been very unsatisfied with the DSL deployment information provided to them. The availability of DSL service in a particular neighborhood is a mystery to some of the phone companies’ representatives also. Post deployment support has also been very meager. There are several information sources for DSL information such as DSLReports.com. There are also companies that are coming up with DSL deployment portals. Berkeley, CA based NightFire has recently announced a service broadbandexpress.com that will help users qualify and order DSL service from one web site. |
