In 1918, after leaving management
of the Lord & Thomas agency in the hands of Claude C. Hopkins, he worked
for the presidential campaign of Warren G. Harding. He supervised publicity
and speech-writing for Warren G. Harding's presidential campaign. He
led the winning campaign for Harding's successful 1920 presidential
race. In the process, he introduced "modern" advertising techniques
to politics. Consequently, he was the first advertising man to be used
by a president, and also among the first to bring modern advertising
techniques to politics.
