The
name of George Gallup is known to
hundreds of millions in all parts of the world, but his contribution in
the contemporary culture, politics and science has been underestimated,
or just unknown to many people. We believe the reasons are multiple, but
the main one is underestimation of the importance of reliable empiric
information for the society and for social sciences. Consequently, the
professional heritage of the researcher who took pains over half a century
to provide people with the most adequate picture of the environment as
perceived by them as well as to provide social researchers with credible
photos of public opinion and tools of measurement is treated superficially
(Doktorov, 2001).
