A Brief Disclosure: How Advertising Works Today
Advertising would not make sense if it did not resonate. It would not resonate if it did not in some manner assist us in completing some sort of cognitive operation.
This operation is begun within the individual but finished within the sphere of the collective.
Advertising is an external storage device for thoughts that have been thought on a collective basis.
It's a manifestation of collective cognition.
Advertising, because it utilizes symbol systems, works only within the context of practice. This practice comes in the shape of collective decision-making.
Advertising provides a forum for this collective practice. It provides the arena within which the individual may come, experience and practice.
Advertising is, therefore, a tool that helps us with our individual thinking. It's a tool we use to do thinking outside of our own heads.
Advertising works as external cognition in action and is a demonstration of society engaged in practice.
