WIRELESS COMPUTING

The wireless computing segment consists of devices used to create wireless home networks for connecting PC’s and laptops. Such devices include:

• Network routers (access points)
• Adapters
• PC cards
• Repeaters
• Wireless bridgeså
• Antennae

Sales of wireless rose dramatically between 2000 and 2004, increasing 1.573% during the five-year period. Installing a wireless network enables families to access the Internet and use computers in many locations in the home. Wireless equipment, such as access points and bridges, are key components that allow users to share information wirelessly throughout the home (Mobile Phones - US - May 2005)

The advantages that wireless computing equipment offer – flexibility of positioning computers anywhere in the home and the added value of being able to share premium Internet connection among multiple computers – can be offset by the fact that many users receive inconsistent and unreliable coverage in some parts of their homes.

For example, if a household positions a single access point in a remote corner of the home, they may have inconsistent coverage, given home size and construction materials. In order to avoid this problem, many households will have to purchase additional access points or equipment, like antennae or bridges to extend the Wi-Fi signal to locations within the home. The requirement for extended coverage in the home is yet another contributing factor driving growth of this market segment.
