Famous Ads by Ogilvy

The makers of Guinness beer asked Ogilvy to create an advertisement that showed how well their beer went with oysters.  Ogilvy tackled the problem by delving into a biology textbook to learn all that he could about oysters.  The result was this guide to oysters, which, at first glance, appears to have nothing to do with beer.  A careful reading, however, reveals that all of the points made in the guide reflect a need for Guinness in some manner or another.

“Ogilvy was so proud of this account that when it was withdrawn a few years later, he reported, ‘I wept in the client's face.’"

In addition to the previous ads listed, there were a few others that helped Ogilvy launch his career as well as Ogilvy and Mather.  The following are Ogilvy’s accounts of these early clients excerpted from his autobiography:

For Puerto Rico I created a campaign which attracted hundreds of factories and millions of tourists.

For Shell I created a campaign which, for the first time in the history of the oil industry, explained the ingredients of gasoline.

For Sears Roebuck I created advertisements which extolled the policies and services of Sears, instead of their merchandise.
